Firearms Terms
These firearms terms are only a partial list to help you with your firearms term search.
We are trying to get as many gun related products on one website to save you time, and help you locate just the item you are
looking for.
Letter "E"
Ear plugs -- A type of hearing protection which fits inside the ear canal.
Earmuffs -- A type of hearing protection which completely covers both ears and is usually attached to a headband (sometimes
to a neckband rather than a headband). See also Muffs, Electronic.
Ears -- Casual slang for hearing protection (muffs or plugs).
Ejection Port -- The opening through which the empty, spent ammunition case is cast out of a firearm.
Ejection Rod -- A sliding metal dowel located at the muzzle end of a revolver cylinder. The rear end of the ejection rod
holds the star, which contacts the case rims when the gun is loaded. After firing, the shooter opens the cylinder and depresses the front end of
the ejection rod, causing the star to shove the empty cases out of the cylinder. See the article titled Load and Unload Revolvers for more
information.
Ejector -- The part of a firearm responsible for tossing the empty case out of the ejection port.
Electronic Hearing Protection -- See Muffs, Electronic.
Electronic Muffs -- See Muffs, Electronic.
External Safety -- A safety which is placed on the outer surfaces of the firearm and is accessible to the user. Not all
external safeties require user attention. For instance, a grip safety is an external safety, but requires no deliberate act on the part of the
shooter in order to do its job.
Extractor -- The part of a firearm responsible for grabbing the empty case by its rim and yanking it out of the chamber as
the slide travels rearward.
Extreme rake -- The angle at which the gun is held on the belt by the holster is called the rake, thus a holster with an
extreme rake is one which holds the gun at a sharper angle than other designs by the same maker. The exact angle this refers to will vary from
maker to maker.
